Capetown Helicopters... hmmm...

In this review I’m going to show you my experience with Cape Town Helicopters. Cape Town Helicopters offers Helicopter tours around Cape Town, taking off from the easternmost tip of the famous Waterfront. The pricing, as usual for Helicopter tours, pretty steep. I went for the 200€ option, bringing me from the Waterfront, all around whole Table Mountain.

The ground experience wasn’t too good though. As this is a famous tourist attraction in Cape Town, you don’t get the experience of something exclusive, which I’d have expected as this attraction of course, attracts the wealthier part of the society, or avgeeks like me and my friend. What happens on the ground is pretty simple, you enter, choose the routing, then they take weight, get show a safety video and you’re ready for the flight. You get the opportunity to store your luggage, then you must wait in the garden of Cape Town Helicopters which consists of plastic grass and some benches. Soon, you’re guided to the landing spot where the Helicopter lands and drops out a bunch of tourists, the engine doesn’t even stop. You’re packed in the Helicopter pretty rough and seconds after, you take off.

The pilot wasn’t to talkative, I guess, flying all those tourists must be pretty boring for him as a pilot. Anyways, the tour started with a beautiful view over the stadium, from the same perspective, the famous aerial pictures of Cape Town are taken from. Then we continued along Lions Head, down around Chapman’s Peak, all the way down to Fish Hoek. Fom there we turned and flew back in direction of the waterfront, but this time on the other side of Table Mountain, over Muizenberg, the University, and the Port. After 22 Minutes or so, the flight ended.

I definitely leave this experience with mixed feelings. Of course, the views where breathtaking, as well it was cool to have flown a Helicopter once in a lifetime. But would I do it again? Probably not! It is quite expensive, and it doesn’t give you an extremely memorable experience, it just gives you pictures and nice views, but there’s no adventure in it at all. I’d have loved to get in contact a little more with the staff or other passengers, this would have made it as cool as it should have been.
