Just a short review on Kulula’s 737-800 today. My Kulula experience flight brings me from Durban to Capetown. The morning before departure, the plane I should have taken, had to perform an emergency landing while heading from Johannesburg to Cape Town, where it initially should have started its Durban rotation. Due to these circumstances, the departure time was slightly adjusted as they had to find an appropriate plane that could fly this rotation instead, I got the info about this via a SMS telling me the about the delayed departure. Anyways, let’s board this grasshopper. The passengers started lining up around 1h prior to boarding time, which was extremely funny to watch as by the time boarding started, everyone seemed pretty tired, I still don’t get why they did that. The boarding process is straight forward, nothing special, the back rows get to board from the back and the front rows through the jetway and the front door. As me and my friend asked to be able to sit next to each other, this wasn’t possible during online check-in, because nearly every seat was already taken, the nice lady at the check in gave us a free kind-of upgrade to the stretch zone, where you have some extra legroom. This was appreciated as the plane was full and Kulula didn’t save any penny in putting the most possible seats in this plane. Legroom would have been an issue for me, being 185cm tall. Other than the beautiful views, you don’t get anything for free on board. There was some service, but I didn’t want to buy anything, so my stomach remained empty. Other than that, the flight was enjoyable, I did like it on board. Also the crew seemed professional and friendly, though I can’t say this for sure as there was not much interaction between passenger and crew. Would I fly Kulula again? Definitely yes, but only if it is the cheapest fare which it wasn’t for the day I flew, my British Airways flight to Durban was way cheaper than the one I took with Kulula, this wasn’t too great as you get much more with British Airways than with Kulula.
