Flying British Airways in domestic within South Africa comes with a side effect that you have the only chance to fly aboard one of their 737-800, in fact, all domestic flights are operated by a 737. Mine today with a 737 classic, the -400 variant, that can rarely be flown as a normal passenger these days. All those flights are operated by Comair, a subsidiary of British Airways.
As this flight is an Economy Class flight and as I don't have any status with BA, I waited together with all the other guests in the main terminal, no lounge, where I soon started boarding. Cool was, it was a bus boarding, which gave nice views over the apron.
The plane from the inside was pretty old fashioned, as it was in service for more than 32 years when flying it. There are no special business class seats, so, as the cabin wasn't fully booked, my row stayed empty so in terms of space, I had the same as when flying the premium class.
As BA is a full service airline, there was also a small breakfast offered wich consisted of a muffin, that tasted mediocre and a yoghurt wich didn't match my taste at all. In terms of drinks, the crew was overwhelmingly generous and handed out even more than one drink upon request, this is quite good, especially keeping in mind that often, the crew refuses to do so even in long haul economy.
The crew was quite friendly, being a little reserved though, so no chats at all with the cabin crew, but a nice service. The captain though loved its 737 which you felt when he was talking about this old plane, he was truly passionate. Sadly the gate agent wasn't too happy about the visit in the cockpit, as he wanted to close the gate as soon as possible, anyways what a nice experience!
Flying the 737 classic should be on every avgeeks bucket list, so it was definitely worth it. The economy product though wasn't too overwhelming, it was just right and definitely matched the price. I'm looking forward to the next flights with the British flag carrier, maybe next time in its home country.
