Let’s have a look at what Lufthansa in their 747-400 has to offer on a short trans-Atlantic flight from Boston to Frankfurt in Business Class. Within the last months I read many bad reviews on the 747-400 of Lufthansa, so I was quite excited and was expecting quite a bad flight. But was it a bad experience? Well let’s have a look!
Boarding is done in Boston in a verry comfortable manner, it takes place for business class, directly from the lounge. The lounge just a simple escalator ride away from the plane.
The old 747 of Lufthansa has a 3 Class layout with Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class. Today I was travelling in Business Class. The seat config comes in a rather outdated 2-3-2 layout. Privacy isn’t present, but it gives you a nice opportunity enjoy a flight together if you’re travelling with friends or family. I personally like this seat in terms of comfort, it is nice as you have quite a lot of legroom and a lot of space for your arms as nothing is blocked by a wall. But keep in mind that the footrest isn’t too comfortable for someone sleeping on the side as it’s quite narrow. Also, the lack of privacy is something to take into account when booking Lufthansa.
Once boarding is nearly completed, you get some welcome drinks, though the selection is not too interesting, you just get to choose between some sparkling wine, orange juice or water. I went for the wine this time, and I quite liked it.
Soon after takeoff the crew started its service, I already outed myself for being an avgeek, following of that, the crew tried its best to ensure the on-board service is memorable. The crew really was the most outstanding part of the flight. They were really kind, didn’t ignore any wish of any passenger which was appreciated especially as this isn’t standard for Lufthansa’s crews. They talked with me for quite a long time, encouraged me and my friend to take pictures and videos as long as we don’t take pictures of other persons. I really did like the open approach to all passengers.
The service started with a drink service, the drinks were accompanied by some nuts, not heated up, but there was a wide selection of different kinds of nuts in the small bowl. Dinner service was made course by course which I didn’t expect at all, as on the Lufthansa website it is mentioned, that on all short trans-Atlantic flights, the whole meal is served on one platter. The food quality though wasn’t too great, the first course was decent, but the main wasn’t what I expected from a business class menu even though the crew did its best to make it perfect. The cheese platter on this flight didn’t match my preferences too, but this was my problem and not the one of Lufthansa. Normally you only get cheese or ice cream as a dessert on those flights, anyways, I asked for ice cream too, and luckily, they had some left. The ice cream was awesome. Breakfast was good too, some kind of muesli with bread and loads of fruits. The fruits where not in season which, in my opinion, wasn’t too great. For the bread, the crew went through the cabin, asking if someone wishes some honey or marmalade, I greatly appreciated that.
Talking about the Amenity Kit you get on a 6.5h flight. The amenities are packed in a bag that is supposed to be re-used as a shopping bag. I like it, that they try to make it reusable, but I think I will never use the bag as a shopping bag, as I assume, I will forget it when packing my things for shopping. Anyways, let’s talk about the content, which isn’t too surprising in my opinion. It comes with a dental kit, some lip balm, and other hydrating lotions, also socks and a bonbon can be found in the amenity kit. The most surprising thing in the kit are protectors for your earphones. When seeing this, the feeling comes up, that the earphones don’t get cleaned after being used which gives me the feeling of them being especially disgusting. The fact that they don’t come wrapped up in any case and are just tingled up in the storage somehow does support my feeling.
So, concluding the good parts of the flight, being the crew and the fact to fly the 747-400. But there are also some big points to complain about, the first one being, that they didn’t offer any kind of pajama on this flight, also they didn’t provide any mattresses for sleeping. But it seemed that you were not supposed to sleep on that flight as it seemed, me and my friend where the only one who wanted to sleep in the whole cabin. Also, the food as already mentioned was definitely better than I was used to with Lufthansa, but it wasn’t great at all. But the flight definitely was worth every penny as it is one of the most memorable flights in my life this being because of the 747-400 and the awesome crew.
